Board Minutes for October 2, 2018

Archie Kendall called the meeting to order at 10:30.

Present were: Dean Otto, Archie Kendall, Pete Hagert, Peggy Seppmann, Arlene Neilsen, Dennis Owens, Barbara Jackowell, Phyllis Granaas, Paige Attrian, and Lori Ruch.

Dean Otto gave the Treasurer’s report. The Profit/Loss Statement showed a $1,547.76 loss for the Jan-Sept. 2018 period and an $16,980.65 total income for the same period.

Our investments are improving. We are taking out more money than we are earning. We need about $12,000.00 from the investments per year. The investment income was $6,711.08 for Jan.-Sept. 2018. Advertising expense was up as was Landscaping and lawn care. Interest expense was down. Verification of funds was accomplished between Archie and Dean with bank and investment statements. The treasurer’s report was approved.

Doug Johnson has retired from the board. Archie and Paige will be added to the signature card and Doug will be removed. Dean said we are “squeaking” along financially as we haven’t made money in several years. Our income comes from burials, and land sales.

People hear about the cemetery through advertising and the website. We have been updating the website.

Dean explained that the supervisor receives $600.00 per quarter for selling grave sites. He also receives $20.00 per hour for other cemetery business such as marking graves and. Etc. The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved.

Pete presented the superintendent’s report. We are charging $450.00 to open and close graves. So far this year we have had 18 burials. Seven were cremations. We sold 7-8 plots.

Maintenance: The northeast corner area has washed out again. There is also a spot near the flagpole that needs repair. It was pointed out that larger rocks work better in the washout area. Dale was to order more gravel and try to fix the NE corner again.

We discussed insurance for tree damage in the cemetery. We have no insurance for trees. However, if a tree falls on the stones, we might be covered for replacing the damaged stones.

The north and east sides of the cemetery lots of broken limbs from storms. It was noted that if we hire someone for tree repair, we should make sure they have insurance and will hold the cemetery harmless for damages. We do have a workman’s comp policy for workers at the cemetery.

Old Business: Dale asked that all things on the ground and pots be removed after Memorial Day. Pete took care of removing the items.

The cemetery looked good except on Memorial Day due to our snowy and cold April.

New Business: For cremations the cemetery gets $250.00 and Dale gets $200.00. For burials Dale gets $600.00 and the cemetery gets $250.00.

You cannot bury someone by yourself. One woman wanted to bury her son by herself.

6 weeks ago we had a graveside service and the mower was cutting grass through the service. We received a complaint that the noise of the mower disturbed the funeral.

The nomination of the officers for the next year was held and all were renominated. Archie for President: Peggy for Vice President; Dean for Treasurer; and Barb for Secretary.

A move was made to accept the resignation of Doug. Suggestions were made for replacements on the board. Mark Daby has a son in the cemetery and Ken Davey. He has done woodworking for about 55 years.

The tentative date for the Spring Meeting is May 14th, 2019. We adjourned to #4 for lunch at noon.

The afternoon session opened at 1:30 and was held at the cemetery. The officers were reelected. Lori was elected to the board.

We viewed the washout area and the state of the trees in the cemetery. The meeting was adjourned.
